Damen's question could have been a disaster if he hadn't added that he didn't know Matthew at all. That, she thinks, will make it easier to lie, to tell Damen things about this Matthew that she's not sure are true but he won't know are true either. She has to laugh for a second to think that the Dutch here is selfish, taking on two men instead of one.
